Variables Used
The survey asked individuals a variety of questions related to their lives. This analysis involved answers to the following questions:
Do you currently have a health condition that has lasted for a year or more or is expected to last for a year or more? Yes, one condition; Yes, more than one condition; No
In general, would you say your health is… Excellent; Very good; Good; Fair; Poor
Age
Gender Male; Female
The following questions ask about you and your household. Are you now… Married; Widowed; Divorced; Separated; Never married
How many people under the age of 19 [other than yourself] are currently living in your household? Only include people under the age of 19 who are living with you at least 50% of the time. 0; 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6 or more
Thinking about your health care experiences over the past 12 months, that is, since [CURRENT MONTH] [CURRENT YEAR-1], was there any time when you needed medical care but did not get it because you couldn’t afford it? Yes; No
Tidying the Data
Before creating visualizations and a model, I removed individuals with missing information out of the questions I chose. I also combined the options in the first question listed above to simply “Yes” and “No,” indicating whether or not the individual had a health condition. Some plots involved further filtering of the data, which are mentioned in the caption or descriptive text.
